International Women's Day

Today is Mezinárodní den žen (MDŽ) which is International Women's Day.

The first Women's Day was first observed in 1909 in the United States.

It was officially adopted as a holiday in the Soviet Union following the 1917 revolution.  Afterwards it was predominately celebrated in communist countries.

The United Nations has observed March 8th as International Women's Day since 1975.

In many Central and East European countries it is still customary to give women flowers on March 8th.
