Masaryk University (MU) was founded in 1919 this year MUNI 100 celebrates the university's centennial. It is the country's second largest university after Charles University in Prague.
Masarykova univerzita is named after Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the first president of independent Czechoslovakia, who was a proponent for a second in Czechland. Apparently during communism the uni was renamed Jan Evangelista Purkyně University, after the Czech biologist. It went back to being Masaryk University following the Velvet Revolution.
Today Masaryk has over 35,000 students studying in nine different faculties. The law and medical schools are extremely well-regarded programmes.
As part of the MUNI 100 festivity's there's an exhibition at the Moravian Gallery going on now and a red pipe sculpture of Masaryk in front.
Here's a short video I found out on YouTube, in English, that talks about the university and its history.
